Kyle Hackett--Aluminum Sketchbook

Kyle Hackett
Aluminum Sketchbook
10"x6"x1"

I started by creating and referencing, a cast aluminum sketchbook that I created. I then used these “aluminum sketches” to create various prints with different color variations. In my final drawing, I reference the prints all well as the aluminum sketchbook. I am very interested in how the history of a material can create meaning. I reverse the roles and create 2-dimensional objects in forms of sketches on a 3-dimensional sculpture however the sculpture produces a 2-dimensional print and final drawing. The actual drawing is considered “final” however is initial identity (the aluminum sketchbook) is metal, something that can last forever. I treat identity as a journey and as being defined by and affected by the amalgamation of experiences something undergoes upon a specific journey.

I worked on this piece to play with the soft qualities associated with the female figure in contrast with the dangerous, sharp pieces of the metal used. Each piece of metal was individually cut then they were welded together. I finished this piece by lighting it on fire to give it the burnt dark color. The stereotype of woman is to be dainty, but this is not always true. This piece is the attempt to show the female figure in a different way.

Kyle Hackett - Saint Obama

Saint Obama

17"x 20"x 3.5"
Oil on Canvas and Constructed Frame

I use an age old tradition of oil painting in an attempt to create a marriage between the classic and the ideas of what contemporary art should be.
I suggest that contemporary ideas can have the same integrity and can exist in the same realm as the classic. Highly influenced by Early Byzantine Art, as well as Albrect Durer's Self-Portrait from the 16th century, I reference religious iconography such as depictions of Christ. I juxtapose the contemporary icon of Barrack Obama in a position of both presidential and spiritual power. However the icon is surrounded by weapons to perhaps suggest the connections between religion power and conflict.
